Teilhabe Digital

to the research projects

Participation of people with cognitive functional impairments

The aim of the project is to promote the social participation of people with intellectual disabilities.

By developing suitable strategies and practical organisational solutions, people with intellectual disabilities as well as their relatives and caregivers are to be empowered to adopt new technologies in the field of consumer technology (e.g. navigation, voice assistance systems, tablets, networked objects). The aim is to improve independent and self-determined participation in society.

The project pursues a transdisciplinary research approach, with project partners from different disciplines (special education, care science, technology) researching possibilities for digital inclusion. Together with people with intellectual disabilities, the aim is to identify barriers to participation with regard to access to digital content and the increasingly digitalised society. Suitable solutions for the use of future technologies and digital media that contribute to promoting social participation will then be identified. Suitable socio-technical arrangements will then be developed and tested together with people with intellectual disabilities and their professional caregivers and relatives. The project pursues a participatory research approach.

Digital divide - digital inclusion

People with intellectual disabilities belong to the group of people who, for various reasons, have the least favourable conditions for taking advantage of the opportunities offered by digitalization and are at the greatest risk of being disadvantaged by the digital divide. While mobile information devices are now easily adaptable, e.g. for people with visual impairments and blindness as well as for people with physical disabilities, concepts of an adapted and adaptable human-technology interface and the corresponding user experiences of people with intellectual disabilities are largely lacking. The "Teilhabe Digital" project therefore sees itself as a direct contribution to the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD), according to which social barriers must be removed through appropriate measures in order to enable full and effective participation on the basis of equal rights. Socio-technical arrangements using new technologies offer great opportunities for the removal of social barriers with regard to a digitalized society. The project is therefore located at the interface between conventional disability support services and the independent and self-determined participation of people with disabilities.
