Integrated nursing care in rural areas through technology-supported assistance and coordination

In the context of demographic change, the organisation and financing of care will become an urgent social and economic challenge in the future.

Even today, the lack of qualified specialists ("care crisis") is already making it difficult to provide care to people in need of care in line with demand, with rural areas being particularly hard hit.

With the "Self-determined and safe" project, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is now funding a joint project in which innovative systems and concepts for needs-based care in rural areas are being developed and evaluated on the basis of new forms of human-technology interaction.

The main aims of the HFU sub-project are to investigate networked IT systems for the communication and coordination of all those involved in care networks and to provide social science support for the overall project.

On a technical level, the potential of integrated systems consisting of cloud-based web applications and mobile information services ("apps") to support caregivers will be investigated.

At the level of accompanying social science research, the work is aimed at the overall evaluation of the instruments and tools developed in the project from the perspective of the actors involved with a focus on civil society involvement in care in rural areas.

At the methodological level, HFU supports the overall project in the systematic involvement of users(user-centered design) in the development processes and in the continuous evaluation of the project results.
