Academic nursing and extended nursing practice in outpatient and inpatient care for the elderly at Caritas

Academically trained nursing staff are predestined to take on expanded roles, tasks and specialisations in nursing care. The aim of such a reorientation in nursing care is to offer patients, residents of care facilities and citizens high-quality medical and nursing care. This also includes ensuring and improving the quality of care. Extended and in-depth nursing practice by academically qualified nursing staff in specific areas of care has proven its worth for many years in Anglo-Saxon or Scandinavian countries, for example, and is already being implemented in some locations in Germany. However, future fields of action, tasks and areas of responsibility of academically trained nursing staff have not yet been sufficiently tested and structurally described.

Aim of the research project:

To develop criteria for future areas of tasks and responsibilities of academically trained nursing staff in outpatient, inpatient long-term care and in neighbourhoods, as well as the derivation of contractual, service law and regulatory framework conditions and recommendations for their deployment. Specifically, recommendations for the deployment of academically trained nursing staff and for the necessary framework conditions for the state of Baden-Württemberg are to be described and formulated in order to promote an understanding of extended nursing practice.
