Entry requirements

This postgraduate course is aimed in particular at graduates of electrical engineering / electronics, computer engineering, microsystems engineering and mechanics-oriented courses. However, it is also open to foreign students who have a minimum of a bachelor's degree.

Half of the lectures on the master's programme are therefore held in English. After two semesters of study and a thesis semester, successful graduates are awarded the internationally recognised degree of Master of Science in Smart Systems. Particularly in view of the rapidly advancing globalisation of all economic sectors, this qualification opens up far-reaching career opportunities.

Application deadlines

Applicants from other EU countries: 15 May (= start of winter semester)
Persons from within the EU: 15 July (= start of winter semester), 15 January (= start of summer semester)

How do I apply?

Application must be made over our online application portal.
You must first register there.
The following documents must be uploaded during the application process. It is best to have them ready in advance.

Application from the EU

  • An officially certified copy of the first professionally qualifying university degree.
  • Curriculum vitae in German.
  • Letter of motivation in German. The letter should be a minimum of one and a maximum of two DIN A4 pages in typewritten form.
  • Proof of English language skills
  • Copies of other relevant documents, if available, e.g. employment references, etc.

Application worldwide

  • An officially certified copy of the university entrance qualification*
  • An officially certified copy of the professionally qualifying university degree*
  • An officially certified copy of a course enrollment list. This is issued by the university attended and is a list of all courses attended during the course of study with grades*.
  • Curriculum vitae in English or German.
  • Proof of language skills in English and German
  • Letter of motivation in English or German. The letter should be a minimum of one and a maximum of two DIN A4 pages in typewritten form.
  • Two letters of recommendation from persons who can assess the applicant's academic abilities and motivation in particular.*
  • Copies of other relevant documents, if available, such as work references, which prove the applicant's particular suitability for the master's programme.
  • In the case of admission of applicants who have a degree issued by a university outside the EU area, the course attendance list enclosed with the application documents must be confirmed in writing directly by the issuing university. The confirmation must be arranged by the admitted applicant. If the applicant does not comply with this obligation, admission may be revoked.

    For applicants from India, China and Vietnam: Certificate from the Academic Evaluation Center (APS certificate).

    *If the original was issued in a language other than English or German, an officially certified translation into English or German.

Proof of language proficiency

The degree programme includes courses in German and English. Therefore, all applicants must provide proof of language skills in both languages.

Applicants whose native language is German

  • Applicants whose native language is German must provide proof of English language skills corresponding to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages.
  • Applicants from HFU can prove this by passing an English course at level 6 in the transcript of records. Proof must be provided by the time of enrolment at the latest.

Applicants whose native language is English

  • Applicants whose native language is English must provide proof of A1 level German language skills at the start of the winter semester and A2 level German language skills at the start of the summer semester.

Applicants whose mother tongue is neither German nor English

  • Applicants whose native language is neither German nor English must provide proof of sufficient knowledge of English: at least CEFR B1 level, TOEFL IBT 90 points or at least 6.5 in the IELTS test.
  • In addition, proof of German language proficiency at level A1 must be provided when commencing studies in the winter semester; proof of German language proficiency at CEFR level A2 must be provided when commencing studies in the summer semester.
